Oil filter

Engine oil filter what it is for

The main function of the oil filter is to retain the particles of impurities created in combustion. It is placed on the delivery of the oil pump and filters the oil before its use to lubricate the engine components.

The presence of impurities in the oil could seriously damage some engine components such as rings, pistons, bushings or block the lubrication passages causing the engine to melt.

Different types of oil filters

The complete model where the filter cartridge, generally composed of a special paper or felt, is enclosed in a metal frame

With cartridge, only the cartridge is replaced while the casing is part of the engine components.

When to replace it?

The oil filter must be replaced every time the oil is changed and in any case always respecting the interval recommended by the manufacturer (15,000-20,000km).

However, the life of the oil filter can be reduced for the following reasons:

Frequent cold starts
Prolonged Judas in city traffic with the engine idling
Use of poor quality fuel which produces many impurities as combustion residues
Driving on dirt roads or on construction sites with high dust content

Symptoms of a bad oil filter

Some symptoms that indicate that the engine oil filter is defective:

The outer filter housing is swollen
At idle, the oil warning light comes on, a symptom of low engine oil pressure
Overheating of the motor
Excessive consumption of lubricant causing frequent top-ups.
