Oil Change

Gearbox oil

It is a fundamental component for the operation of car transmission. The main function of changing the car is to vary the ratio between the engine speed and the vehicle speed, in order to obtain an appropriate driving torque to the wheels. Gearbox oil is very often a component neglected by the motorist also because it is difficult to check the level and very often the motorist does not know which is the correct interval for changing the oil change. In the automotive sector there are two different families of changes:

Manual mechanical gearbox

Automatic transmission

The mechanical gearbox is present in the very first motorcycles and almost universally in cars. This change varies the transmission ratio by means of a lever that is moved, forming the typical "H" shape. The first manual changes were not synchronized and to change gears it was often necessary to do the classic "double-barrel". In cars after the 60s the synchronized gearbox made its appearance.

The specifications of the car manual transmission oil

The specifications to which oil for gearboxes refers are mainly the APIs and are the following:

API GL3 for Gearboxes and differential gears operating in moderately severe conditions. They are generally additive oils with high anti-wear properties.

API GL4 Hypoid differentials in general. Additive oils with medium EP properties (Extreme Pressures)

API GL5 Hypoid differentials subjected to variable loads. Oils with high properties EP MIL-L-2105D

Each specification is for a specific application and an API GL5 transmission oil is not better than an API GL4 but should only be used in different applications.

When to change transmission oil?

Generally the mechanic decides to replace the gearbox oil at the same time as the clutch replacement even if the car manufacturers only require a check every 4 years since the car gearbox is like a gearbox without any contamination of external substances. Eventual the signals to keep in mind to understand that the time has come to replace the transmission oil and verify the state of wear of our gearbox are:

  • Difficulty changing gears both hot and cold
  • Excessive noise during gear changes
  • Gearshift lever jam

When one of these symptoms occurs, it is advisable to go immediately to a mechanic to have the transmission and the transmission oil checked to prevent greater damage.

Automatic transmission oil

Many cars currently on the market have an automatic gearbox that can automatically select the ratio without human intervention, greatly simplifying driving. The most used system is hydraulic, based on pressure variations, which however presents problems of cost, reliability and fuel consumption. This type of automatic transmission in fact due to its good functioning requires engines with high cilidrate, so it is particularly widespread in countries where the cost of fuel is particularly low, like the United States, where five cars out of six have installed this device.

Automatic transmission oil change

The automatic transmission oil change is generally carried out every 80,000 km or in any case according to the manufacturer's instructions, changing the automatic transmission oil is absolutely not an operation that can be done in proprpio because it requires special instruments. The oil for automatic transmission unlike the manual transmission oil has different specifications based on the manufacturer and the performance of the automatic transmission. The specifications of the parent company must be respected because otherwise damage can be done and it is not convenient given the high cost of automatic transmission.
